Ashtamudi Lake
[ Edit
Ashtamudi Lake (Ashtamudi Kayal) in the Kollam District of Kerala is the gateway to the backwaters of Kerala. In Malalyalam Ashta means 'eight' and mudi means 'branch', therefore Ashtamudi lake is a lake with eight branches and can be likened to the shape of an octopus. It has the distinction of being the second largest wetland and offers livelihood to the local fishermen. The lake with the Neendakara port offers transport means for trading of cashew, coir and marine products. The lake and the backwater canals have coconut groves and palm trees on the banks and offer a spectacular view of the coastal life. Traversing the backwaters in the traditional houseboats is an added attraction which helps one to have a closer look on the village life and fishing techniques while sailing through the enchanting backwaters.
