The Arakkal palace is an historic monument famous as the only royal residence of Muslims in Kerala. It is situated at Ayikkara, just 3 kms from Kannur.The Arakkal royal family reigned over the Malabar coast and even Lakshadweep. They were benevolent rulers and set the example of rendering equality to male and female family members. The eldest member of the family was made the head and ruler. The male rulers were known as Ali Raja, while the female rulers were called Arakkal Beevis. Today this palace has been undertaken by the Archaeological Survey of India and the Durbar Hall of the palace has been converted into a museum and is open to the public as an historic attraction.
