I’ve been to Kovalam several times but still when the college trip was arranged to Kovalam, I didn’t back out. It was the last college trip as all of us were in final year. We started from our college in Kottayam at 6 am. We were a group of 24 students and two teachers. After a short break at Kottarakara for breakfast, we continued to Trivandrum. Before proceeding to Kovalam, we visited the Padmanabhaswamy temple ,the zoo and Veli tourist village. After lunch, we started for Kovalam which is just 16 Kms from Thiruvananthapuram. Our bus parked near the junction as further there was no parking space due to tourist rush. From the junction, we walked for about 1 Km to reach the Kovalam beach. Our umbrellas were a boon in this walk as the sun was shining bright and strong. Kovalam has three beaches separated by large rocky outcroppings—Lighthouse beach, Hawah beach, and Samudra beach. Bordered by open air restaurants and shops selling curios, Lighthouse beach is the largest and most popular beach in Kovalam. The middle beach, Hawah, is primarily used by local fishermen. The northernmost Samudra beach is calm, peaceful and ideal for sunbathing. A number of large hotels are located on this beach. We all settled at the lighthouse beach. The darers in the team ventured for surfing and swimming while others lazed on the beach. The coast guards were around so none of us were scared. It was fun to let the waves wash over you and sweep us forward. Even without entering the water, there is a lot to do in Kovalam. There are curio shops to attract visitors especially foreigners. Sea food is also another attraction. The tempting aroma catches one off guard and you are sure to venture into the beachside restaurants. The sunset at Kovalam is very picturesque. Its wonderful sitting on the beach and watch the sun slowly turn red and submerge in the water. Undoubtedly, the evening is the best part on the beach. After 6.30 pm, we were all called to reach the bus and start back home. The return journey on the bus was fun with songs and jokes and reached Kottayam late at night around 10.30 and we camped in the hostel.
