St Francis is reputed to be the earliest European church in South India.It was built by the Portuguese Franciscan friars and later reconstructed by the Dutch. This church is historical because the mortal remains of Vasco Da Gama were buried here in 1524. The remains were later moved to Lisbon but the tombstone still remains. Today the church is owned by the church of South India and it is kept open on weekdays for visitors and tourists.
