There is a legend connected with this place. It is believed that the Pandavas spent their days here during Vanavasa. Yudhishtira, the elder of the Pandava brothers wished to perform the Dwadasi Pooja on the Malayalam month of Kumbham during their stay in Bharananganam. However, he was in a dilemma since he did not have any idols of Lord Vishnu to worship. To help his devotee out of this dilemma, Lord Krishna gave a beautiful idol to Veda Vyasa and Narada Muni and asked them to perform the Pooja for Yudhishtira. They reached the banks of the holy river Gauna (the present Meenachil River), installed the idol of Lord Krishna and performed the Vishnu Pooja for Yudhishtira. As a result, the vratha of Pandavas was fulfilled and they did the Paranaveedal ritual to end their vratha. Later this place came to be known as Paranaaranyam meaning the forest where the Paranaveedal ceremony was conducted. Later the Malayalam equivalent of the name came to be Paranakananam, which after hundreds of years of usage became Bharananganam. Thus, the place got its name. Legend also goes that a Sree Krishna swami temple was constructed in the place where the sages installed the idol of god.
