Bharananganam is a renowned pilgrim center and today it is synonymous with the name of the first saint of Kerala, St. Alphonsa.The fame of Bharananganam reached every nook and corner of the world when Pope Benedict XVI canonized St. Alphonsa on October 12, 2008. St. Alphonsa has purified the land with her blessed life, which was entirely spent in Bharananganam. Due to its religious heritage, Bharananganam is also known, as the Lisieux of India and has acquired a distinctive place on the world pilgrimage map. This blessed land is situated along the banks of the Meenachil river of Kottayam district. St. Thomas the apostle of India, social reformer Sree Narayana Guru, Mother Theresa and blessed Chavara Elias are the famous people who have visited this place. Bharananganam is also known as Dakshina Guruvayoor (Guruvayoor of the south) because of the ancient Sree Krishna Swami Temple located here. Bharananganam is also a place of archaeological importance. Many coins that belong to the Buddhist era and many silver coins of the 18th century have been unearthed from this place. It is considered to be the place where the Buddhists settled in Kerala. The Sastha temple at Edamattom is a reminder of this belief.
