About Erumely
[Edit]
Erumely is an en route destination during the pilgimage to Sabarimala . This town got its name from the word ‘erumakolli’(literally translated as killed the buffalo). An eruma, a she buffalo had been wrecking the lives of the people of this small village. No man could kill this demon. It is believed that the incarnation of Lord Ayyppa as son of Siva and Vishnu annhilated this demon. It is often reckoned as the gateway to Sabarimala, the hillock shrine of Lord Ayyappa. It is on the Kanjirappalli - Pathanamthitta Route, 60 kms from Kottayam town. Even though a little town, it is an example of relgious harmony. The villagers are engaged mainly in rubber cultivation. The small streams and rivers and the hillocks here and there makes it a picturesque locale. The famous Vavaru Palli is a famous attraction here and it’s a symbol of Hindu Muslim unity.Vavar is believed to have been a friend of Sree Ayappa and that’s why the pilgrims come here to pay homage at this mosque before traversing to Sabarimala. This place is very famous for 'Pettathullal' a kind of mass spritual dance performed by Ayyappa devotees. Pettathullal is performed in the Makaravilaku season i.e. from mid December to mid January every year. The barefooted devotees perform this dance by wearing black dothis, and garnishing their body with different colour powders and flowers and carrying toy bows, arrows and shrub branchs and chanting slogans.
