Guruvayur
[
Edit
]
Guruvayoor is situated in the Trichur district of Kerala, South India. This town is famous all over the world for its Sri Krishna Temple. The name of the place itself is derived from the name of the deity of the temple, Guruvayoorappan. The well-known temple is dedicated to Lord Krishna synonymous to Guruvayoorappan. This small town is one of the most significant and pious pilgrim centers in South India. Guruvayoor is devotedly called the Bhoolokavaikunta or Heaven on Earth. It is also known as the ‘Dwaraka of the South’. This small town has assumed a place even on the Indian railway map with the broad gauge railway line linking it with Thrissur. The three great towns linked to Lord Krishna-Mathura, Dwarka and Guruvayoor are linked together by the railways. Entry is permitted to Hindus only and a strict dress code has to be followed.

History
[

]
The temple has a rich history that could be dated back to 16th century A.D. The temple is 5000 years old. It is said that once a childless royal couple, King Sutapas and his wife worshipped Lord Brahma who handed over the idol and asked them to worship it. Its this idol that has been now installed at Guruvayoor. Eventually on being pleased with the couple and their fervent prayers, Lord Vishnu appeared in all his splendour and promised to be born as their child. Lord Krishna was born as their son. After he left this earth for his heavenly abode, the holy port city of Dwarka was submerged. Guru, the preceptor of the gods and his disciple, Vayu, God of Winds were given the task to install the idol of Lord Krishna of the Dwaraka temple in a suitable place. After a long quest for a suitable place, they entered Kerala and met the legendary creator, Parasurama who led them to a beautiful lake full of lotus, which is today the ‘Rudrathirtha’ beside which Shiva and Paravati waited to welcome them. It was at this place the idol was installed and the place and temple came to be known as Guru – Vayur, a reverential semantic reference to Guru and Vayu.
