Idukki

Best of nature’s wild in Kerala lies in Idukki. It is the second largest district of Kerala as well as a major tourist destination also. 97% of its total area is covered by forests and mountains. The district headquarters is located at Kuyilimala in Painavu. Idukki is bordered by Pathanamthitta in the south, Kottayam to the southwest, Ernakulam to the northwest and Thrissur to the north and Coimbature, Dindigul and Theni Districts in Tamilnadu to the east. The Periyar, Thodupuzhayar and Thalayar are the important rivers of the district. It is known for the splendid green mountains, streams, spices and cool climate. It nestles the captivating hill stations of Munnar and Devikulam. Idukki has the largest arch dam in India constructed for the Idukki Hydro Electric Power Project in 1969 with the cooperation of the Canadian Government. This single project powers almost half of the entire state and some parts of neighboring states. Unquestionably, there is no other place than Idukki to revel in the beauty of nature’s wild with easy access and state of art facilities. This district has several protected areas including: Periyar Tiger Reserve in the south, Kurinjimala Sanctuary to the east, Chinnar Wildlife Sanctuary to the north east, Eravikulam National Park and Anamudi Shola National Park to the north, Pampadum Shola National Park to the south and Thattekad Bird Sanctuary in the west. These protected areas are especially known for several threatened and endemic species including Tiger, Nilgiri Thar, Grizzled Giant Squirrel, Nilgiri Wood-pigeon, Elephant, Gaur, Sambar Deer, and Neelakurinji.

History

During 800 –1102 A.D, the High ranges consisting of present Devikulam , Udumbanchola and Peermade taluks were part of the Kingdom of Vembolinad. Later during the 16 th century the Poonjar Raja ruled major portions of Idukki district. The upliftment of the district started with the advent of Europen planters to this region. The credit of introducing agriculture to the thick forests of Idukki goes to a British planter, JD Munroe. The then Poonjar Raja, Kerala Varma in 1877, leased the Kannan Devan hills to JD Munroe who started plantations and later formed the North Travancore Land planting and Agriculture society. The members of the society developed their own estates in various parts of High ranges . Roads were opened , transport organised, houses and factories built and productions rose rapidly in the succeeding years. The pallivasal Hydroelectric Project, the first hydroelectric project of the State was initially constructed by the tea companies for the industrial use. There are evidences of a railway track having existed in Munnar way back in the wake of developlment showing the pace of progress in those days.As development progressed, deforestaion increased and vast areas of evergreen forests were destroyed by the end of the 19th century. Today, efforts are made to control deforestaion and protect the wildlife environment.
