About
Kannur
[
Edit
]
Kannur was a colonial town and the stronghold of many invaders who craved for gaining supremacy in the thriving spice trade on its shores. It lies in between the Western Ghats and the Arabian Sea and is bounded by Kasaragod District to the north and Kozhikode District to the south. Kannur District is known as the land of looms and lores, because of the loom industries functioning in the district and festivals held in temples. Its also the land of beaches alluring many to its sands. The district is a major centre of Theyyam, a ritual dance of northern Kerala, and small shrines known as kavus associated with the Theyyam dot the district.It is said this land is christened Kannur from‘Kannan’ meaning Krishna, a Hindu deity, and ‘Ur’ place, making it the place of Lord Krishna. Its stands as a befitting example of the conglomeration of different races, culture and religion. The relics of Neolithic age upto the Aryan invasions, followed by the Chera conquests, Arab and European dominion all stand testimony to this fact. It is not wrong to say that history lives in every corner of Kannur.

History

]
The earliest evidence of human habitation in the district are rock-cut caves and megalithic burial sites of the Neolithic age. The Taliparamba-Kannur-Thalassery area abounds in rock-cut caves, dolmens, burial stone circles and menhirs, all of megalithic burial order. In ancient times, the district was part of the Chera kingdom but later it was captured by the Kolathiri Rajas. It continued as the capital of the Kolathiris for many centuries. During their reign, they established flourishing trade with Arabs and Persians. In fact, Marco Polo has referred to ‘Cannanore as a great emporia of spice trade’. Also this town has been mentioned in the writings of Fahien, the Buddhist pilgrim and Ibn Batuta, writer and historian of Tangiers. The Portuguese Viceroy, Francisco de Almedia seized Kannur in 1505 and it was the Portuguese who bulit the St Anjelos Fort still standing majestic reminding one and all of the yesteryears. In 1558, the Kolathiris came openly into the field against the Portuguese by allying with the Kunjali Marakkars of Kozhikode. The Kolathiris and the Zamorins of Kozhikode fought a common war against Portuguese and the besieged Fort St. Angelo in 1564. This fort was again annexed in the seventeenth century by the Dutch who later sold it to the Arakkal rajas, the only ruling Muslim dynaty of Kerala. They were ousted by the troops of the East India company.In the latter half of the 18th century, Hyder Ali and Tipu Sultan, rulers of Mysore, conquered much of the district and came into conflict with the British. In 1792, at the conclusion of the Third Anglo-Mysore War, the British took over Kannur and the surrounding region, which became the new Malabar District of British India's Madras Presidency. History cites that Mahatma Gandhi and Maulana Shaukat Ali toured the district to carry the message of the Non-Co-operation and Khilafat Movements. The Khilafat movement Mopilah Rebellion of 1921 was the uprising of Muslims against the British rule.
