Kodungallur was known as Muziris and it was a thriving port in the first century. The Roman traveler, Pliny, described Muziris as Primum Emporium Indiae,the most important port in India. It was ruled by the Chera dynasty and was the capital of Cheraman Perumal, the last Chera ruler in the 7th century AD. It was a major centre of trade at that time especially the sea trade with the Arab countries.The legend is that he abdicated his throne and divided his kingdom among the local chieftains and left for Mecca to embrace Islam.
