KODUNGALLUR is surrounded by backwaters and the sea and has a rich historical background. It is said St. Thomas reached Kodungalloor when he came to India in 52 AD and the St Thomas Church is a standing replica of the event. Cheraman Juma Mosque is a very famous mosque in Kerala as it is the first mosque in India where Juma prayers were held for the first time. The mosque was built in the year 629 A.D. and is famous for a lamp that is considered important by people of all religions. Also, the Bhagawathy temple here is very famous and the annual festival at the temple attracts a large number of devotees.
