About
Kovalam
[
Edit
]
The coastal town of Kovalam lies just 16 kms south of the capital city of Thiruvananthapuram and is Kerala’s most developed beach destination. Kovalam means a grove of coconut trees. The coconut trees lined on the outskirts of the sandy beach gives it an exceptional beauty as if a canopy of shelter surrounds the sun baked, sea lapped beach.Its a tropical paradise with best of resorts vying with each other in offering the most modern amenities and luxuries. With the influx of tourists, this beach is no longer secluded but always thronging with guests.Life on the beach starts with the mayhem activity of the fisher folk followed by the onlookers which includes the local people as well as the tourists. The pervading rays of the sun are welcome to those craving for sun lustre and copper tan on their bodies.As the sun gets ferocious, the sun bathers take refuge under the cocnut palms and thatched shelters. The evening is awesome with the enchanting sunset in mingled hues of orange, yellow and red. A stroll on the cool evening beach and savouring the taste of coastal delights is equally enrapturing.Kovalam is today emerging as a centre for Ayurvedic treatments with numerous Ayurvedic salons, and health resorts. The Light House Beach is characterised by the35 metre high light house which towers over it atop Kurumkal hillock. Kovalam has been called as the "Paradise of the South". Its scenic beauty and serenity is supplemented by the availability of excellent accommodation. Even though crowded, the charm of this world famous beach lingers on in the minds of the visitors.

History
[
Edit
]
This enthralling hamlet was initially a fishing settlement, adorned with spectacular beaches. Kovalam was brought to the public eye by the Maharaja of Travancore. The European guests of the then Travancore kingdom discovered the potentiality of Kovalam beach as a tourist destination in the 1930s. However, Kovalam shot into limelight in the early seventies with arrivals of the masses of hippies. That started the transformation of a casual fishing village of Kerala into one of the most important tourist destinations in all India- the Kovalam beach. Twenty-First Century Kovalam has lost most of its original serenity and scenic splendour and has undergone a complete metamorphosis. Today it has a cosmopolitan look as well as cosmopolitan flavor.
