Vasco Da Gama’s discovery of the sea route to India by landing at Kappad beach in 1498 brought Quilandi also on the historical map as it’s the nearest town to the beach. Quilandy has also played an important role in Indian history as its the the birth place of eminent personalities of the freedom struggle, like Kunjali Marakkar, K.Kelappan, C.K.G and many more. ‘Marakkar Bhavanam’ is still preserved and has collections of ancient swords, canon balls, knives etc. K.Kelappan (Known as Kerala Gandhi), was born in near by village Muchukunnu in Quilandy. Kelappaji was the extreme disciple of Gandhian thoughts, who fought for social reforms on one hand and the British on the other. Quilandy is also the centre where the ‘Keezhariyur Bomb Case’ took place during the Quit India movement protesting against the British Raj.
