14 kms from Kottayam town, Kumarakom is an enchanting backwater destination, spread over a cluster of islands on the Vembanad lake, surrounded by a tangle of lush green paddy fields, swaying palms and tropical waterways. Due to its easy accessibility from Kottayam town, it has become the focus of boom in backwater tourism with exotic resorts of all major hotel chains and luxurious houseboats providing exclusive services. The Vembanad lake runs into the mainland and makes the intricate network of canals and lagoons. A cruise through lake, gently rocked by the waves rippling to the rhythm of the swaying palms is an exhilarating experience. Moreover, the boat cruise through these waters gives an insight into the rural life. Also, the waterways have rich marine life. 'Kumarakom Karimeen' (pearl spotted fish), Konju (tiger prawns), Njandu (crabs), Chemeen (prawns) are the exotic few. The 14 acre bird sanctuary is a major attraction of this breathtaking backwater village.Ayurvedic rejuvenation programmes are also available here in the invigorating atmosphere .

History

Kumarakom was initially an area located near a marshy mangrove on the edge of the Vembanad lake. The credit for categorizing Kumarakom as an ideal destination is due to an English missionary, Mr George Alfred Baker. He realized the immense potential of this area and it was in the year1878, the marshy mangrove on the bank of the Vembanad Lake was cleared and replaced by coconut plantations. He was awestruck by the beauty of this village that he decided to settle here. The bungalows with British legacy are still the living witnesses of the era when Baker and his ancestors made their dwelling here alongwith other development works like schools and churches. "Kari Saipu" as Alfred Baker was known locally and the ‘History house’ referring to the Bakers bungalow are still a part of Kumarakom’s history. Four generations of Bakers lived in the house until 1962. It is reported that they spoke Malayalam, the local language, and even wore the "mundu", which is the traditional formal wear of the people of Kerala. The Baker Memorial School in Kottayam, was started around 1825, by members of the same family. The Baker House itself was in ruins, until it was taken over by the Taj Group and restored into a luxury heritage hotel
