Kuttanad, the major granary of Kerala is a low lying picturesque location of Kerala resplendent with paddy fields.It is known for its farming below sea level (about 4 to 10 feet) and four major rivers Pampa, Meenachil, Achankovil and Manimala flow into the region. This area is interlaced by canals, fields and backwaters. People living here are dependant on agriculture.Fishing is also another major occupation of the people.There are wayside eat-outs with spicy fish delicacies as well as toddy.Nedumudy, Kavalam and Champakulam are some of the villages in this region. Kuttanad is also known as the Netherland of India because the cultivated lands are below sea level. The scenic countryside of Kuttanadu also has rich crops of coconuts, banana, fruit trees wherever possible.Boat races are part of the life of the Kuttanadan people. The Champakulam boat race is very famous.
