Munnar, the most enchanting hill station of Kerala is located in the Idukki district. It lies nestled in the southern part of the western ghats. It is one of the most sought after tourist destinations by the domestic as well as the international tourists. In fact the very word “munnar” derived from the Tamil words Munu (three) and aaru (river), denotes the scenic splendor of this town located at the confluence of the Muthirapuzha, Chandavari and Kundaly rivers. This exclusive hill station with its breathatking beauty and serenity and cool atmosphere soothes the mind and heart of every visitor. The winding hills and lush green tea estates coupled with the salubrious climate is an ideal getaway especially for honeymooners.The region in and around Munnar varies in height from 1,600 meters (5,249 ft) to 1,800 meters (5,906 ft) above mean sea level. The tourist season is from August to May. However, even the monsoons are lovely with many streams and rivulets in the area.Munnar, the legacy of the “poonjar” royal family became a plantation town during the British rule and the developments then paved the way for the tourists.As the hotel industry boomed, Munnar carved a niche for itself in the world toursim market. The sobriquet ‘Kashmir of the South’ is apt for this mesmerising hill station.
