About Neeloor
[Edit]
Neeloor is a picturesque village sandwiched between small hills and situated on the borders of Kottayam district, Kerala and neighboured to Idukki district. Pala and Thodupuzha are the nearest towns and one can reach Neeloor easily by bus from the two towns. Being a cent percent agricultural village, the whole area is covered by various type of agricultural plants and the deep green colour which covers the village is the sign of prosperity achieved by the hardworking people. The history of Neeloor is faded in the pages of history. But the ancient temple indicates that the village owns a centuries old heritage. The new history begins with the beginning of the 20th century, when people from other areas came to Neeloor and settled there. In 1925 a church was established and soon a primary school was started. In 1959 the primary school was upgraded to Upper Primary School and in 1961 a high school was started. The high school was among the first recognised un- aided schools in Kerala and today it is well known as St. Joseph’s English Medium High School and has a long history of 100% pass in SSLC Examinations. Hostel facilities are provided for boys and girls. An ICSE school is also functioning along with it. Many luminaries in judicial, administrative and police service, journalism, medical and engineering fields are former students of the St.Joseph’s High School. St. Joseph’s Chapel situated at the Neeloor Junction near the school campus is a well know pilgrim destination. It’s beautiful design is the first attempt in Kerala to get free from the traditional church styles. A good library with a track record of about seven decades and with thousands of books is the cultural centre of the village. The majestic peak of Noorumala overlooks the village. On the eastern side is Ellumpuram hill, also known as St.Benedict Mount, due to the small shrine on the hill top. On the top of the hill is a wide and flat rock. A cool breeze is always there and the panoramic view from there is unique.
