Puthuppally is a Panchayat headquarters town in the Kottayam district of the Indian state of Kerala, on the banks of the Kodoor River. This village is famous for the 16th-century (AD 1640)St. George Valiya Pally. The feast of this church, held in May 6th and May 7th, is famous and attracts a lot of pilgrims from all over Kerala. St.George Syrian Orthodox Patriarchal Church is situated nearby Valiya Pally. The town also has a Siva Temple called "Thrikkovil Siva Kshethram and there is the famous Hindu pilgrimage, Saraswathi Temple called as Dakshina Mookambika or Panachikad Temple nearby. Agriculture is the major source of revenue in this place. Coconut, rice and pepper were the major crops cultivated here. However, Rubber is the major cash crop nowadays. The Rubber Board of India has its major office in this village.There are also other smaller rubber processing companies. Prominent Malayalam author Vettom Mani and the famous scientist George Sudarshan, as well as the great Astrologist Kizhakkel Abraham Varghese are from Puthuppally. Puthuppally Vediveyppu (Firing) during the Indian Freedom Struggle is one of the important historical event of this village. One person got martyred in the Firing. Puthuppally assembly constituency is part of Kottayam (Lok Sabha constituency).The Ex-Chief Minister of Kerala Sri Oommen Chandy, has represented the Puthuppally Legislative Constituency for around 35 years. Puthuppally is famous for the Nadan Panthu Kali (Thukal Panthu Kali) and various tournaments of the Panthu Kali are held here annually. This traditional game is facing a slow death as the new generation not finding it very attractive. The famous Panichikad temple is closeby.
