About Thekkady
[Edit]
For a rendezvous in the wild, there’s no better place than Thekkady in God’s own country.Thekkady (Idukki district) is the location of the Periyar National Park, now known as the Periyar Tiger Reserve. It lies 5 km from the town of Kumily, the border of Kerala and Tamil Nadu. The sanctuary has achieved worldwide acclaims and today, the very name Thekkady conjures up images of herds of elephants. Even though declared as a Tiger Reserve in 1978, the tiger population is rare and elusive. Its the wild elephants who are the major attraction of this reserve. Apart from the elephants, it is home to sambar, tigers, gaur, lion-tailed Macaques and Nilgiri Langurs. The sanctuary is famous for its dense evergreen, semi-evergreen, moist deciduous forests and savanna grass lands. The spice plantaions of Thekkady , its winding hills and the myriad of flora and fauna, and the opportunity to watch wildlife at close quarters is what makes this destination an essential ingredient of every tour package to South India.
