About Thiruvananthapuram
[Edit]
Kerala’s capital, the coastal city of Thiruvananthapuram (its colonial name was Trivandrum) is set on seven low hills, 87 kms from the southern tip of India. ‘Thiruvananthapuram’ means "City of Lord Anantha" in Sanskrit and Malayalam. The name derived from the deity of the Padmanabhaswamy temple at the centre of the city. Literally, Anantha is the serpent Shesha on whom Padmanabhan or Vishnu, the preserver of the Hindu trinity reclines. Mahatma Gandhi, the father of our nation has referred to Thiruvananthapuram as the "Evergreen city of India". The city is characterized by its undulating terrain of low coastal hills, coconut groves and busy commercial alleys. Apart from being the political nerve centre of Kerala, it is also a major academic hub and is home to several educational institutions including the University of Kerala.Another feather in its cap is the Technopark, which is the largest IT park in India and third largest in Asia. Thiruvananthapuram is also the cradle of India's ambitious space programme with the Vikram Sarabhai Space Centre (VSSC) and Thumba Equatorial Rocket Launching Station (TERLS). Thiruvananthapuram is famous for its enchanting tourist spots including the internationally renowned Kovalam beach, historic palaces, temples, lakes, dams, Ponmudi hill station etc.
