Thodupuzha is the biggest town in Idukki district. It is 59 km from Ernakulam and is often referred to as the satellite town of Ernakulam. Thodupuzha is sobriqueted as the Gateway Of the High Ranges. Thodupuzha is also the name of the river that flows through Thodupuzha town The name Thodupuzha comes from two Malayalam words – Thodu and puzha. Thodu means brooklet and puzha means river thereby meaning that the brooklet eventually turned to a river and it is flowing through the centre of this town. In Malayalam Thodu means touch so another interpretation is that it is the place that touches a river. It is a place reflecting religious harmony as Christian churches, Hindu temples and Muslim mosques abound in Thodupuzha. The terrain has prosperous plantations of Cardamom,Rubber ,Ginger, Bananas, Coco, Tapioca, Pepper, etc
