[Edit]
Tirur is a small beautiful coastal town in Malapuram district. It is one of the important business centres of Malappuram district. It is known for the trading center of fish and betel. It was part of the first laid railroad in Kerala. This town is most famous as the birth place of Thunchan Ramanujan Ezhuthchan, the founder of Malayalam. It is also the site of the 'wagon tragedy' in 1921 whereby the British police brutally killed more than fifty people by closing them in an airtight train wagon. The wagon with the dead bodies was brought to Tirur where the bodies were laid to rest in Khabristan of the mosque nearby. Tirur Municipality has built a town hall in memory of the Wagon Tragedy, where there is a real size train wagon built right next to the building.
