Bekal Fort This fort is more than 300years old and the largest and the best-preserved fort in Kerala, lies 16 Kms south of Kasaragod on the national highway at the northern tip of the state. The fort is in a circular imposing structure rising 130 ft. above sea level, stands on a 35 acre headland that runs into the Arabian se
. Just outside the fort there is a mosque built by Tippu Sultan of Mysore. At the entrance is the Anjaneya temple, dedicated to Sree Hanuman shows the religious harmony of the people. The zigzag entrance and the trenches around the fort show the defense strategy connected with the fort. Unlike other Forts, Bekal fort was not a center of administration for no remains of a palace are found within the fort. It is exclusively for fulfilling the defense requirements. The holes on the outer walls of the fort are specially designed to defend the fort effectively. The holes at top are meant for aiming at the farthest points; the holes below are meant for hitting when the enemy is nearer and the holes underneath facilitate attacking when the enemy is very near to the fort. The sea bastion, underground tunnels and the observation tower in the fort are impressive. The Bekal Fort has been a source of attraction for historians, tourists and nature - lovers for centuries since it embodies memories of a glorious past. Due to its historic relevance, the fort is controlled by the Archaeological Survey of India.
